How Should Riding Tights Fit? A Practical Guide

HALT Equestrian

You pull your riding tights on, walk to the yard and find yourself adjusting the waistband before you have even picked up a hoof. Or they feel fine standing still, but tight across the seat when you bend. The useful question is not just whether they go on: it is whether they feel right through the movements you actually make.

A good fit should let you bend, sit and move without constant adjustments. Here is a practical way to check a new pair before deciding whether to keep them.

Start with the guide for that product

Check the size guide on the product page rather than assuming every style uses the same sizing. HALT adult Stayproof tights use XS–XXL labels, corresponding to UK clothing sizes 6–16. Wilson breeches have their own size labels and guide. A letter size in one range should not be used to guess your size in another.

Your usual UK clothing size is a starting point. If you wear different sizes across brands, tell us which pair you currently find comfortable and what you would like to change about the fit.

Check the waistband without pulling it into place

Let the waistband sit naturally, then walk, sit and bend. Notice whether it digs in, rolls or needs repeated pulling up. A slipping waistband does not automatically mean you need a smaller size: the cut and how the garment sits through the seat can also matter. Look at the whole fit before changing size.

Look at the seat and thighs while you move

Try a seated position and a comfortable bend at the knees. The fabric should allow the movement you need without feeling restrictive. Check for pulling at seams, uncomfortable pressure or loose folds that you can feel beneath you. Use ordinary indoor movements for this check and follow the returns conditions while trying items on.

Check the lower leg with your usual riding kit

Smooth the fabric down the leg and see where it finishes. Bunching at the ankle can feel different once boots are on. Check that the waistband and crotch are comfortably positioned before judging length; pulling a pair too high or leaving them sitting too low changes how the leg feels.

Between sizes? Ask about the style

There is no useful universal rule to always size up or always size down. Tell us the product, your usual UK size and whether you prefer a closer or more relaxed feel. We can help you compare the options rather than leave you guessing.

Find a pair for your everyday riding

Explore Plum Stayproof riding tights or Navy Stayproof riding tights, then open the size guide beside your chosen product. You can also read rider reviews for customers’ experiences.
